Comparison of PRF With CTG Using CAF in Managing Recession

Objectives: The aim of the study is to compare the effectiveness of Coronally Advanced Flap (CAF)+ Platelet Rich Fibrin (PRF) with CAF + Connective Tissue Graft ( CTG) in management of isolated Miller's class I and class II recession.
Methods: Forty patients with isolated maxillary and mandibular recession in incisors, canines and premolars representing with Millers's class I and class II were treated with CAF with platelet rich fibrin and CAF with connective tissue graft. The following parameters were measured at baseline 3,6 and 9 months post treatment : recession depth (RD), recession width (RW), probing depth (PD), clinical attachment level (CAL) percentage of root coverage (RC%) and keratinized tissue thickness ( KT). Healing index and VAS score for pain was assessed 1 week post operatively.
Results: Both the groups showed improvement from baseline in all the clinical parameters. When compared between the two groups, CTG showed a significant improvement in RD, RW, CAL, and RC% whereas PD and KT was not significant between the two groups. The percentage of root coverage was 86.2% +29.7% in the CTG group and in the PRF group the percentage of root coverage was 39.8% +44.8% ( p value < 0.001). The healing index and VAS score for pain was statistically significant between the two groups at 1 week postoperative evaluation, favoring the PRF group.
Conclusions: Overall the 9 month result of the present study indicate that Platelet Rich Fibrin is effective but not as effective as Connective Tissue Graft in the treatment of Miller's class I and Class II recession.
