Comparison of Dentoskeletal Changes in Skeletal Class II Cases Using Two Different Fixed Functional Appliances - Forsus Fatigue Resistant Device and Powerscope Class II Corrector

Objectives: To compare the dentoskeletal changes seen in skeletal class II cases when treated by Forsus fatigue resistant device and Powerscope Class II corrector between the age group of 13 - 17 years.
Methods: A Pilot study was done in young adult patients seeking orthodontic treatment (n=8) age 13- 17 years, overjet 6-10 mm with class II division I malocclusion were randomly divided into 2 groups. Group I included 4 patients treated with Forsus fatigue resistant device . Group II included 4 patients treated with Powerscope Class II corrector. Dentoskeletal changes were analyzed on Lateral Cephalograms taken before (T1) and (T2) at the end of the treatment. Intergroup differences were evaluated with Wilcoxon Signed rank test and intra group differences were assessed using Mann-Whitney test.
Results: Both were useful in improving the esthetics. Vertical skeletal measurements were significantly increased after functional appliance treatment. These results were more pronounced with Powerscope appliance than Forsus appliance.Anteroposterior disharmony between the jaws was corrected, as assessed by ANB angle (Powerscope = 1.5°, Forsus = 0.75°). This when compared was found to be statistically significant in
both groups (P = 0.002, P = 0.021) . The valueswhen compared between both groups were also found to be significant (P = 0.028). Vertical changes as seen by assessing FH MP (2.0°, 2.42°) and OP SN angles (2.33° and 3.16°) was found to be increased in both groups, respectively . Increase in incisor mandibular plane angle was seen in both groups, but was found to be more pronounced with Powerscope classII corrector group.
Conclusions: This study compared the treatment effect of Powerscope class II Corrector with those Forsus appliance. Both groups showed similar results in
normalization of dentoskeletal parameters, leading to correction of Class II malocclusion. In this study we found Powerscope appliance to have more mandibular lengthening effect as compared to Forsus, and thus was found to be more effective in treatment of Class II cases
