Oral Health-Related Quality of Life in 15-Year Olds in Suva, Fiji
Objectives: To assess the oral health-related quality of life in 15-year olds in Suva using the OIDP-Child questionnaire. Methods: The eight-item Oral Impact on Daily Performance (Child) (OIDP-Child) questionnaire was administered to 281, 15-year-olds from four randomly selected high schools in Suva. Ethical approvals were obtained from Fiji National Health and Research Committee and the Ministry of Education. All data was entered and analyzed in Epi-Info (3.5.1) and SPSS. Results: From the sample of participants, 46.98% experienced at least one impact during the 3 months preceding the study. Cronbach’ alpha for the OIDP frequency items was 0.70 and the corrected item-total correlation ranged from 0.13 to 0.57. Eating and relaxing were the two most common performances affected and toothache and dental sensitivity were the two most commonly perceived problems. Conclusions: The original version of the OIDP-Child tool showed acceptable psychometric properties when used directly in the Fiji setting. The findings of the research showed that oral health affected the quality of life in 15-year olds in Suva, Fiji. Oral impacts were prevalent, but not severe.
