Antimicrobial Effect of a Polyguanidine Conjugate (CatDex) on Enterococcus Faecalis

Objectives: CatDex a poly-guanidine conjugate have previously been demostrated in several tumor cell lines. The present study investigate the possible antimicrobial properties of 1 mM CatDex when used as an oral irrigant solution. Sodium hypochlorite 5.25% the most prevalent irrigant, was used as a positive control. The antimicrobial effect was studied on root canal inoculated with Enterocossus faecalis.
Methods: CatDex was prepared as decribed previously. Enterococcus faecalis was prepared in BHI media. A total of 19 single-rooted teeth were extracted and selected.The teeth were performed lime #45 instrumented and cleaned and then past a sterility test. After the teeth were inoculated with 20 ul contanining 106 number of Enterococcus faecalis and incubated for 24 h. Then the Catdex, sodium hypchlorite and saline were added to the teeth rooted for 10, 20 and 30 min. A sterile tip paper #45 was introduce in each teeth rooth to take a sample and placed on a petry dish for 24h incubation. The dental pulp stems cell viability was analized by FMCA method.
Results: The antimicrobial effect at 1 mM CatDex concentration after 30 min incubation showed 2-3% viability of the bacteria E faecalis. Sodium hypochlorite at 5.25% showed no growth
Conclusions: Catdex has potential as a novel oral irrigant agent that can be an alternative to the use of sodium hypchlorite
