Chenopodium Ambrosioides L. (Mastruz) on Bone Repair of Diabetic Rats
Objectives: The Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a metabolic disorder that can negatively influence bone repair. The Chenopodium ambrosioidesL (mastruz) is a phytotherapeutical substance with a recognized osteogenic activity. Thus, the aim of this in vivo study was to evaluate the effect of mastruz on the repair of alveolar bone defects of rats with DM induced by streptozotocin (STZ). Methods: Sixteen rats were divided into 3 groups: Diabetic mellitus (DM) treated with mastruz (n=8); non-diabetic (mastruz-control) treated with mastruz (n=4) and non-diabetic (plain-control) with no further treatment (n=4). After DM induction with STZ all animals were subjected to extraction of the upper right incisor. Then, the alveolus of the plain-control group rats was filled with blood clot, whereas the rats of the other groups were filled with mastruz extract. Fourteen days later the animals were sacrificed and the heads were processed for histomorphometric analyses. The slides were blindly analyzed by 3 calibrated examiners. Data of osteoblasts and bone trabeculae counting were statistically compared by ANOVA and Tukey´s test (p<0.0-5). Results: The histomorphometric analysis showed a significantly higher bone neoformation area in groups treated with mastruz. The number of osteoblasts in plain-control group was significantly smaller than that of DM, which was significantly smaller than matruz-control (p<0.05). Conclusions: Based on the results it was concluded that matruz contributes considerably to the bone repair even in rats with DM by stimulating the increase of osteoblasts.
