Antifungal Activity of Pinocembrin Against Candida Albicans
Objectives: The objective of this in vitro study was to test the antifungal activity of the flavonoid Pinocembrin against C. albicans Methods: C. albicans (ATCC: 90028) at 2.5 x 103 cells/ml was cultured in RPMI-medium at 37oC in 5% CO2 for 24 hours (n=9) according to NCLLS guidelines. The minimal inhibitory concentration - MIC of Pinocembrin was determined by testing a range from diluting 0.5 µM – 500 µM. Fluconazole (3 µM) and solutions with 1% DMSO served as positive and vehicle controls respectively. The MIC was determined after 24h. Results: Pinocembrin showed inhibition against C. albicans growth and an MIC was established between 100 µM-150 µM. Conclusions: Pinocembrin shows inhibitory effects on fungal growth.
