Inhibitory Effect of Streptococcus Mutans Bacteriocins Against Gram Negative Bacteria
Objectives: The aim of this study is demonstrate the inhibitory effect of 6 different mutacins distributed onto different genetics profiles over Gram negative strains Methods: 10 clinical isolates of S. mutans previously characterized phenotypically and genotypically with different mutacin genetic profile, including mutacin I, II, III, IV, V and K8 were used as producer strain. We evaluate the growth inhibitory effects of mutacins strains producers against oral and medical interest strains of Gram negative bacteria by the method of Deferred Antagonism Assay. Finally was assessed the presence of mutacins from supernatants by SDS -PAGE and its inhibitory effect by activity assay plate. All strains belong to the culture collection of the Molecular Bacteriology Laboratory (CIB). Results: All of bacteriocins-like substances produced by Streptococccus mutans strains exhibits a low molecular weight and showed growth inhibitory effect against oral and medical interest Gram negative bacterias. Conclusions: Streptococccus mutans is a Gram positive bacterial species that produces low molecular weight bacteriocins having an inhibitory effect against oral and medical interest Gram negative bacterias.
