Meta-analysis Association Study Between Interleukin-8 Levels and Chronic Periodontal Disease
Objectives: Current literature present contradictory findings regarding interleukin-8 (IL-8) levels in patients with chronic periodontitis (CP). The purpose of this systematic review with meta-analysis was to test the evidence for IL-8 levels and CP association. Methods: Two independent reviewers used Ovid PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus databases for the search. A total of 10 publications were included for meta-analysis, from an initial search of 2,606 hits, which represented 628 unique citations. The unit of measure used to quantify levels of IL-8 varied among the selected articles (pg/site, pg/μl and pg/30s). For statistical analysis, the studies were divided into three groups according to the unit of measure used. Results: The result of the meta-analysis considering studies using pg/site and pg/30s, demonstrated no statistically significant difference in the levels of IL-8 between patients with and without periodontal disease. However, for pg/μl measurement, patients with periodontal disease had lower levels of IL-8 in gingival crevicular fluid in comparison with patients of the control group (95% confidence interval: -1416.91 − -248.01), suggesting an inverse relationship between the levels of IL-8 and periodontal condition. Conclusions: In conclusion, the IL-8 levels (pg/μl) were significantly lower in gingival crevicular fluid of individuals with chronic periodontitis compared with periodontal health patients.
