A Method to Overcome the Discoloration of Laminate-bonded Teeth
Objectives: Laminate veneer may offer good esthetic due to their ability to closely mimic the way natural teeth reflect. Therefore tooth discoloration may affect the final color of the restoration. Methods: An adult patient was applied to our clinic with the main complaint of discoloration on her previously laminate bonded anterior teeth. In the clinical examination it was observed that good marginal adaptation was observed. Replacing laminate restorations with the new ones was an option for this condition. However, it may cause loss of hard tissue and extra cost for the patient. Therefore, office bleaching was preferred to overcome the discoloration. This clinical report describes the management of an adult with discoloration of teeth who desired improvement in dental esthetics after laminate restoration. The patient exhibited discoloration on the lingual side of anterior teeth. The color was detected with the scale (Vita toothguide 3D-master, Vita Zahnfabrik Bad Sackingen, Germany) prior to the office-bleaching. A light cured resin (Top Dam blue, FGM dental products, Brazil) was used to isolate the gingiva. Office- bleaching was preferred and a 35% hydrogen peroxide-based gel (Whiteness HP, FGM dental products, Brazil), which is applied to the lingual side of the anterior teeth for a period of 15 to 60 min. The bleaching agent was removed by using suction, wet-cotton rolls and then followed by mouth-rinsing. Results: After office-bleaching the color was detected with the same scale and it was observed that the color changed from 2L-2.5 to 1M-2. Conclusions: In the clinical situation of extrinsic discoloration, office bleaching applied on the lingual side may be a treatment alternative to replacing laminate veneers. It offers a simple, conservative, and economical solution to satisfy the esthetic requirements of these patients.
