Effects of Laser Irradiation on the Surface of Titanium Discs

Objectives: This study evaluated in vitro the morphological and microstructural changes in the surfaces of dental implants discs irradiated by different types of lasers (CO2, Er: YAG and Nd: YAG) roughness by scanning electron microscopy, confocal microscopy, observing the effects of laser irradiation on implant surfaces for this treatment option.
Methods: In this study 28 titanium disks with Neoporos surface, 2 mm thick and 6 mm in diameter, specially manufactured for the experiment, were divided into 4 groups: G1 - Control Group (n = 4), divided into 2 subgroups (G1 A and B), the G1 A disks were evaluated by surface roughness tester and disks from G1 B were first assessed by SEM and then by MC; G2 - group irradiated by CO2 laser (n = 8); G3 - Group irradiated by Er: YAG laser (n = 8); and G4: Group irradiated by Nd: YAG laser (n = 8). From 8 discs of each group irradiated by these different lasers, 4 were irradiated for 30 seconds and 4 were irradiated for 60 seconds. Once irradiated, they were divided into 2 subgroups (A and B) each having, two disks irradiated for 30 seconds and two discs irradiated for 60 seconds. After the irradiation, the disks of subgroup A were evaluated by surface roughness tester and discs of subgroup B were first assessed by SEM and then by MC. Data were analyzed with three-way ANOVA (p<0,05).
Results: The results of the analysis of roughness, both ΔRa as the average Ra obtained through MC, showed that the groups irradiated with CO2 laser remained similar to the control group, while the groups irradiated with lasers Er:YAG and Nd:YAG, regardless of the time of irradiation, had a change of surface roughness compared to the control group and the group irradiated by CO2 laser.
Conclusions: Use of lasers of Er: YAG and Nd: YAG caused morphological changes and microstructural implant surface.
