Bone Formation After Protein Application Extracted From Natural Latex

Objectives: The objective was evaluate the bone repair process in calvarial bone defects of rats, using different types of bone grafts isolated or associated to fraction one of the protein extracted from Hevea brasiliensis (P-1) through histological methods for quantification.
Methods: One hundred and twelve albino Wistar rats (250 g) were divided into 8 groups, and divided according to the sacrifice time, at 4 and 6 weeks. The groups were the following: AuG) particulate autogenous bone graft; AlG) particulate allogenic bone graft; XeG) xenogenic bone graft (lyophilized bovine bone); AuG/P1) autogenous bone graft + 5 µg P-1; AlG/P1) allogenic bone graft + 5 µg P-1; XeG/P1) xenogenic bone graft + 5 µg P-1; P1) 5 µg P-1; Control) only the bone defect. Results were statistically analyzed using ANOVA and Tukey test (p<0.05).
Results: Data showed that, at four weeks, AuG, AlG, AuG/P1 and AlG/P1groups showed better bone formation than Control group (p<0.05); at six weeks, AuG, AlG, and XeG and XeG/P1 showed greater bone formation than Control group (p<0.05), and AuG/P1, AlG/P1 with significance difference (p<0.001) compared to Control.
Conclusions: In conclusion, according to this methodology and the experimental model used, the association of P-1 to autograft and allogenic graft accelerated the bone healing process, especially after 6 weeks.
