Influence of Two Different Titanium Dental Surfaces on Antibacterial Photodynamic Therapy – Pilot Study

Objectives: The aim of the present study was to investigate the capacity of the decontamination of two Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) protocols on non-treated and nitriding-etched-treated titanium surfaces.
Methods: Two different protocols were tested to investigate the effect of PDT. Laser and Toluidine Bue (MB) or a blue light emitting diode (LED) and curcumine on decontaminating titanium discs previously infected with E. coli and S. aureus strains. Titanium discs with nitriding-etched-treated and non-treated surfaces were used (n=36). Two photosensitizers - toluidine blue and curcumine – were excited respectively with laser and blue LED. All tests were performed in triplicate and compared with a control group (CG). The averages for paired Student´s t-test were used with a significance level of 5%.
Results: PDT reduced the number of bacteria on titanium disks when compared to CG disks regardless to surface treatment or type of bacterial contamination. There was no statistical significance among the tested groups. PDT with blue LED and curcumine showed higher degree of decontamination (p = 0.032 – Paired Student´s t-Test) on non-treated surfaces titanium discs and E.coli contamination, when compared with nitriding-etched-treated titanium surfaces with the same contaminating bacteria.
Conclusions: The surface treatment of titanium discs does interfere in PDT decontamination although further studies should be done to elucidate this issue.
