Gestational Diabetes Patients Don’t Have Higher Prevalence of Periodontal Disease

Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate periodontal condition of patients with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM).
Methods: This research was approved by Botucatu School of Medicine ethical committee in human research (576/2003). Test group(n=32) consisted of diagnosed pregnant GDM patients and control group(n=34) of non-pregnant women without systemic disease. Periodontal status was evaluated clinically (probing depth (PD), bleeding on probing (BOP), clinical attachment level (CAL)). Prevalence of gingivitis and periodontal disease was calculated. Data were statistically analyzed (Student’s, Mann-Whitney U, p<0.05).
Results: Test group had a mean age of 29.91±1.08 years and control group 28.76±0.97 years. Test group had a statistically significant higher (p<0.05) PD (2.24±0.08) than control group (2.00±0.07). CAL was similar (p>0.05) between test (0.68±0.11) and control groups (0.50±0.11). BOP was similar (p>0.05) in control (0.25±0.04) and test (0.14±0.02) groups. Prevalence of health, gingivitis, mild, moderate and severe periodontal disease was similar between groups (p>0.05). There was no difference (p>0.05) among periodontal clinical parameters for GDM patients who use insulin and oral hypoglycemic drugs.
Conclusions: In conclusion, there was no higher prevalence of periodontal disease in GDM patients.
