MTA and Calcium Silicate Cement With Silver Nanoparticles
Objectives: Mineral Trioxide Aggregate is a calcium silicate cement (CS) in association with bismuth oxide (OBI). The use of zirconium oxide (ZrO2) as radiopacifier and the addition of silver nanoparticles (NPsAg) may improve material properties. The aim of this study was to evaluate physicochemical, mechanical and antimicrobial properties of the association of MTA (Angelus) and Calcium Silicate Cement (CS) with NPsAg: White MTA (Angelus, Brazil), CS/30% ZrO2, MTA/NPsAg, and CS/30%ZrO2/NPsAg. Methods: The pH and solubility were evaluated 5, 15 hours, 2 and 7 days after manipulation. The setting time was analyzed using Gilmore needle. A mechanical test was used to evaluate the compressive strength. Radiopacity was evaluated using an aluminum (Al) step-wedge. Antimicrobial evaluation was performed by direct contact tests in planktonic bacteria and on biofilms of Enterococcus faecalis induced for 15 days on bovine dentin. Direct contact was performed using fresh cement and 5 and 15 h contact. The test on biofilm was performed 2 days after manipulation and biofilm contact for 5 and 15h. The results were submitted to ANOVA and Tukey tests with 5% significance. Results: The addition of NPsAg to MTA increased pH and decreased solubility and setting time. The association of NPsAg to CS/ZrO2 decreased solubility and increased setting time and compressive strength of the material. The radiopacity of all materials was greater than 4 mm Al. Antimicrobial activity evaluation by using direct contact with planktonic cells and antibiofilm activity showed that all groups were better than control group except MTA in the 5 h period. Greater antibiofilm effect was observed for materials with NPsAg after 15h contact. Conclusions: It was concluded that the addition of silver nanoparticles to the MTA and the CS/Zirconium oxide favors physicochemical and mechanical properties, as well as promotes increased antibacterial and antibiofilm activity.
