Effect of Valeriana Officinalis on Masseter Muscle Pain
Objectives: Masseter muscle pain may be a consequence of fatigue after overloading during night. The aim of this research was to evaluate the efficacy of the extract of Valeriana Officinalis (VO) in reducing masseter muscle pain on waking. Methods: 30 consecutive subjects, 8 male and 22 females, between 18 – 26 yearss old (mean age 20±2.23 ys) with probable bruxism and with pain in the right masseter muscle were included. Edentulous subjects, patients with previous TMD or bruxism treatment and consuming drugs (NSAID, muscle relaxants and all drugs involved on pain and muscle activity) were excluded. Visual Analog Scale (VAS) for pain sensation on waking, and Pressure Pain Threshold (PPT) through an algometer (Somedic®) were applied before treatment in the more painful pain site of the muscle (T0). The site was identifying for control. All subjects received one bottle of 20 ml of VO and were instructed to take 12 drops diluted in water before bed during 30 days. No other indications were given. After 30 days of treatment (T1), the evaluation with VAS and PPT was performed again. For data analyzing t-Test was used. Results: Concerning VAS, pain sensation on waking was 4.61±1.41 at T0, and 2.87±1.44 at T1 (P<0.001). Concerning PPT, pain threshold under pressure was 425,13±71,7 at T0, and decrease to 323.5±47.8 at T1 (P<0.005). Conclusions: Ingestion of Valeriana officinalis in subjects with muscle pain due to overload, only generates a placebo effect on pain sensation in masseter muscles of subjects with probable bruxism when waking.
