Effect of Carbamide Peroxide on Ion Release of Restorative Materials

Objectives: The aim of this in vitro study is to evaluate the ion releasing of seven different restorative materials after exposure to three different storage solutions.
Methods: Seven porcelain materials were selected: a low fusing porcelain (Vita VM7); two lithium disilicate glass ceramics (IPS e.max Press and IPS e.max CAD); two zirconium substructure materials (IPS e.max ZirCAD and Vita In-Ceram YZ for InLab); and two ceromers (Estenia and Tescera). The three storage solutions chosen were: 17 % carbamide peroxide VOCO Perfect Bleach (pH=6) for two hours a day for 14 days, as a bleaching agent; 4% acetic acid (pH=2.4) at 80° C for 16 hours ; and distilled water (pH=7) at 37° C for 16 hours . Three experimental groups were fabricated, each containing 70 specimens with a diameter of 10 mm and a thickness of 2 mm. Release of twenty ions were evaluated in this study. Ion releasing measurements were performed by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES) after immersion in solutions.
Statistical analyses were performed with SPSS 17.0 in the Windows environment. Ion releasing results were evaluated by one-way ANOVA and Tukey’s HSD tests. The statistically meaningful level was accepted as p < 0.05.
Results: The greatest ion release was observed in the Tescera group, while the least ion release was observed in e.max ZirCAD group. The greatest ion release was found in carbamide peroxide immersion solution and the least ion release was found in distilled water. When released quantities of ions were evaluated, sodium was the most released ion and cadminum was the least released ion.
Conclusions: Restorations should be protected before bleaching for fear of ion releasing.
