Effect of Nanotubular Surface Modification/Allogeneic Graft on Osseointegration

Objectives: Surface treatment of dental implants can improve clot formation and favor the osseointegration. The allogeneic graft association of fibrin glue with tranexamic acid (TEA) confers a reducing on fibrin degradation and prevents the early blood clot breakdown. The aim of this study was to evaluate the osseointegration of implants surface treated with TiO2 nanotubes (diameters of ~ 70nm) associated with fibrin adhesive/ tranexamic acid and installed with compromised primary stability.
Methods: 50 implants of titanium ASTM F67 (Grade 4) with dimensions of 2.1 x 2.8mm Ø were manufactured. They were divided (n=10) into Group I (machined Ti), Group II (TiO2 nanotubes), Group III (TiO2 nanotubes / fibrin adhesive), Group IV (TiO2 nanotubes / tranexamic acid) Group V (TiO2 nanotubes /fibrin adhesive/tranexamic acid). Titania nanotubes were grown on Ti-Cp surface using anodization technique and surface morphology was examined through scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The implants were surgically placed in tibia (defects with 2.5x3.2 mmØ) of 50 male rats (250 grams). The surgical sites were rinsed with 5%tranexamic acid solution in Groups IV and V. Were filled with fibrin adhesive into Groups III and V. The animals were euthanized at 45 days postoperative and histomorphometric analysis (bone to implant contact (BIC) and bone volume (BV) were performed.
Results: Results showed that bone to implant contact (BIC) and bone volume (BV) at Group V were significantly higher than at Group I (p<0.05). There was no statistical difference among all other groups for both BIC and BV analysis.
Conclusions: The results suggest that allogeneic graft association of fibrin glue with tranexamic acid (TEA) may have a positive effect on bone formation around implants with TiO2 nanotubes surface and installed with compromised primary stability.
