Effect of Fluoride Release From Temporary Cements on Permanent Cementation
Objectives: Goal of this study was to investigate the effect of fluoride release of temporary cements on permanent cementation.
Methods: Fluoride release of an experimental temporary cement (EXPTC, 3M ESPE), a zinc oxide based temporary cement (Tempbond™ NE, TBNE, Kerr) and a reference glass-ionomer cement Ketac™ Cem (KC, 3M ESPE) was measured. Three cured discs (20 x 1 mm) of each material were stored in 37C de-ionized water, and F release was measured after 14 days using fluoride selective electrode in TISAB buffer solution.
Bovine teeth were ground with 120 and 320 grit silicon carbide sand paper to prepare enamel and dentin surfaces. Above temporary cements were used per their instructions for use (IFU): cement was applied to pre-cured 4mm diameter/2mm high buttons of Z-250 (3M ESPE) and placed on hard tissue; 250g weight was applied for 1 minute and excess cement removed. Adhesion samples were stored in 37C de-ionized water for 2 weeks and were broken in shear mode by Instron. Subsequently, teeth were cleaned using pumice slurry and adhesion samples were prepared following IFU of permanent cement in light-cure mode (RelyXTM Unicem 2, 3M ESPE) with steps above. Bond strengths were measured after 1 day.
Results: Mean values for cumulative fluoride release and bond strengths, including standard deviations, are summarized in following tables:
Conclusions: ANOVA analysis was performed at p < 0.05 per Tukey’s pairwise comparison test. Though there was significant difference in F release of temporary cements, there was no significant impact on bond strengths of permanent cement to hard tissues.
