Clinical Evaluation-criteria for Denture-teeth: 2-year-results of SR Phonares II

Objectives: To evaluate clinical behavior of denture teeth after 2-years using new evaluation criteria.
Methods: 482 denture-teeth (SR Phonares II, Ivoclar Vivadent, Schaan, FL) were used to manufacture 43 removable dentures (partial/complete-dentures, hybrid/implant-supported-overdentures). Denture base material was randomly divided into 4 groups (IvoBase-High-Impact, IvoBase-Hybrid, SR Ivocap-High-Impact, ProBase-Cold, Ivoclar Vivadent). After 2-years of clinical function all dentures were examined by means of newly developed criteria for evaluation of denture teeth. These criteria (table 1) including evaluation of aesthetic, functional, biological properties are based on FDI-criteria for evaluation of indirect restorations (Hickel et al. 2010).
Results: After 2-years denture teeth were scored “excellent” to “good” for most of aesthetic, functional and biological properties (table 2). The reattachment of 4 teeth to denture base after retention loss leads to an inferior score. A denture-drop on washbasin during denture-cleaning-procedure leads to bulkfracture of 2 teeth (repairable chairside). 6 teeth showed polishable moderate cracks (grade 3). 3 teeth of an implant-supported denture showed localized-moderate wear.
Conclusions: 100% of removable dentures presented an “excellent”/”good” clinical behavior after 2-years. Due to occlusal adjustments and 2-years of function 35.5% of denture teeth showed small areas with silk-mat luster (scored“good”). 37.1% of teeth showed localized plaque-accumulation (scored“good”) at predilection-areas (e.g. interdental), but only 8 patients were related to 81% of localized plaque-accumulation. 14 posterior teeth had minor (<2mm2) cracks/chippings (1.7%, scored“good”) or moderate (>2mm2, no bulkfracture) cracks/chippings (1.2% scored“sufficient”), but 11 of these incidents occurred in 2 patients (79%). 2 repairable bulkfractures (0.4%, scored“unsatisfactory”) were caused by accident (denture-drop on washbasin). 4 teeth (0.8%) had to be reattached by dental-technician due to retention loss. However, tooth-retention not only depends on denture-teeth material, but also on denture-manufacturing process, e.g. wax remnants isolating denture tooth surface.
In summary, SR Phonares II is perfectly indicated to be used as denture teeth for removable prostheses.
