Torque Expression of Two Active Self-ligating Brackets (Empower and Innovation R)
Objectives: The torque moment generated by third-order bend is important for root movement. The purpose of present study was to compare torque expression of two different self-ligating brackets after twisting a 0.019*0.025 inch stainless steel wire in upper anterior teeth. Methods: Two active types of self ligating-brackets (Empower, In-Ovation R) with 0.022 inch slot were used. A stepper machine designed and used to rotate wire in either clockwise or counter clockwise direction with 5 degree increments and with range of -15 to +40 degrees (loading) and from +40 to -15 degrees (unloading). Brackets were mounted on an aluminum plate in rotation axis and torque measurement load cell placed in the same rotation axis. Statistical analysis was undertaken using t-test (significant: p<0.05). Results: bracket torque was increased by increasing torque angle. In both two types of brackets the measured torque in loading was greater than unloading counterpart. The Innovation R brackets at unloading demonstrated the maximum range of expressed torque. In contrast to unloading pattern, the magnitude of measured torque for Empower brackets in different degree of loading were greater than In-Ovation R, however differences were not significant except for 30 and 35 degrees at loading and 30, 35 and 40 degrees at unloading. Conclusions: there was no statistically significant difference between two active types of self-ligation brackets in torque expression.
