The Effect of Denture Adhesives Enriched With Chlorhexidine Diacetat on the Proliferation of Candida Albicans

Objectives: To evaluate the in vitro growth inhibition of Candida albicans of three different denture adhesives materials modified by chlorhexidine diacetate (CHDA).
Methods: The direct contact test (DCT) was used to evaluate the antibacterial properties of Protefix® Kukident ®, and Corega®, in contact with Candida albicans. Eight samples of each of the tested materials with and without CHDA 7%/wt were placed on the sidewalls of wells in a 96 microtiter plate. After setting, C.albicans cells were placed on the surface of each sample for 1 hour at 370C. Brain heart infusion broth was then added to each well and bacterial growth was followed for 24 hours in a temperature-controlled spectrophotometer and growth curves were plotted. Additional samples were immersed in phosphate-buffered-saline (PBS) for 7, 14 and 21 days and then tested by the DCT.
Statistical analysis included two-way ANOVA, one-way ANOVA, and Tukey multiple comparison. Confidence level were set at p<0.005
Results: Denture adhesives containing CHDA had an inhibitory effect on C. albicans during the first 7 days which decreased over time. After three weeks only Corega and Kukident containing CHDA demonstrated some antimycotic effect.
Conclusions: Chlorhexidine diacetate released from denture adhesives materials may prevent denture stomatitis, caused by Candida albicans
