Evaluation of New Dental Light-Curing Units

Objectives: To compare the photo-polymerizing efficiency of a high-intensity, short-exposure, dental LED light-curing unit (FlashMax P3, CMS Dental) with six newest commercial LED LCUs.
Methods: Seven LCUs (3 per brand, n = 21) were studied. The LCU irradiances, radiant exposures as a function of vertical & lateral distances along with spectral wavelength distribution, and the temperature rise produced from the radiant emission were measured respectively using a thermopile power-meter (10A-V1.1, Ophir), a MARC® Resin Calibrator (Blue-Light Analytics Inc.), and a thermocouple probe (OMEGA® DP41) placed 2 mm away from the light-tip center. Photo-polymerizing efficiency was assessed through micro-hardness profiling of a hybrid resin-composite, FiltekTM Z250 (3M-ESPE): three disc-specimens (ø 6 mm x h 2 mm) for each combination of LCU brands and two different source-to-target distances (2 mm & 8 mm) were prepared and stored dry at 37 C for 24 h prior to testing; then, Knoop hardness was measured using a micro-hardness tester (Buehler Micromet 5100). A one-way ANOVA/Tukey was performed per specific measurement (α = 0.05).
Results: Significant differences were found between LCU brands per specific measurement (See Table 1).
Conclusions: FlashMax P3 demonstrated the highest irradiance and radiant heat but the lowest significant Knoop hardness at the 8 mm source-to-target distance as compared to the other LCUs listed in Table 1.
