Evaluation of Different Ceramic Pretreatments Using a New Universal Adhesive
Objectives: Dependent from the application silicate-ceramics requires different ceramic pretreatments. When luting indirect restorations it is recommended to etch extraorally the surface with hydrofluoric acid prior silanisation. The intraoral usage of hydrofluoric acid is not riskless. Therefore other ceramic pretreatments are necessary when repairing indirect restorations intraorally. The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of different ceramic pretreatments prior application of the new Universal Adhesive (IBUN, Heraeus Kulzer) on the shear bond strength (SBS) to Venus Diamond (A2, Heraeus Kulzer).
Methods: As ceramic substrate HeraCeram Sun (Heraeus Kulzer) was used. As adhesive iBUN + Ceramic Primer (CP, Heraeus Kulzer) was used. The ceramic surface was sandblasted using Al2O3 (50µm) or glass beads (Bego Perlablast, 50µm, DIN 8201) with 1.5bar pressure before adhesive application. Grinding was done either with SiC-paper 320grid (P400) or a K1 grinder. For cleaning HF (9 %, Porcelain Etch, Ultradent) or H3PO4 (Etch 35 Gel, Heraeus Kulzer) was used. After each step the ceramic surface was rinsed with water for 20s. Bonding was performed either with or without iBCP (10s setting time + air-drying) prior the iBUN treatment. Shear bond strength (SBS) was measured according ISO 29022 after thermo-cycling (5000 cycles, 5-55°C/10s dwell time).
Results: Results are shown in the table. Conclusions: The results showed that shear bond strength to ceramic is influenced by the preconditioning process.
