Compatibility of Universal Adhesives With Composite Cements in Different Curing-Modes
Objectives: To investigate the compatibility of a newly developed Universal Bonding (IBUN, Heraeus Kulzer) with composite luting cements cured in self- or dual-curing mode. Methods: Dentine and enamel specimens from extracted human molars were produced. The tested adhesives were IBUN, Scotchbond Universal (SUA + DC Activator, 3M ESPE) and All-Bond Universal (ABU, Bisco). The adhesives were applied according to their IFU by one person from Heraeus Kulzer’ s R&D (HK, n=8/group) and 6 General Dental Practitioners (GDPs, n=6/group). Adhesives were cured using a LED LCU (Translux PowerBlue, Heraeus Kulzer). Afterwards, the composite based luting cement Clearfil Esthetic (Kuraray) was bulk filled in cylindrical plastic molds (Ultradent equipment) and either dual cured (20 s light curing + 15 min self-curing at 37°C) or self-cured (1h at 37°C). Shear bond strength measuring (SBS) was performed according ISO 29022 either after 1, 24 or 72 hours water storage at 37°C. Statistics were done using ANOVA followed by LSD (between adhesives) and t-test within adhesives (p<0.05). Results: See results in tables. Conclusions: All evaluated adhesives tested by HK revealed compatibility to composite luting cements regardless from the cement curing mode. GDPs achieved generally lower bond strength. IBUN seems to be less technique sensitive compared to SUA+DC Activator. The additional use of an activator in case of SUA could be a reason for higher preparation sensitivity.
