Impact in the Need for Prosthesis in Institutionalized Elderly, Using as Criteria Social and Clinical

Objectives: The aim was analyze the impact in the need for prosthesis in institutionalized elderly, using criteria social and clinical.
Methods: Sample consisted aged over 60 years, both genders, independent or partially dependent. Sample size was calculated considering power of 0.80 test, significance level of 0.05 and odds ratio equal to 2, coming to a total of 208 randomly selected subjects. The research instruments used for the subjective assessment were GOHAI, IODD, demographic data. Clinical examinations data followed the methodology by WHO. The data were grouped and inserted into a model for the joint evaluation between the pattern of needs perceived by the patient and clinical. Results were evaluated by bivariate analysis with the chi-square test. Variables with p<0.20 were tested in multivariate logistic regression remained in the model if p<0.05.
Results: 81.73 % were not married, 51.44 % were edentulous , 68.75% used some type of prosthesis, 64.91 % needed prostheses , 72.11 % had low education and 60.58 % self- rated oral health as excellent and good. Global mean GOHAI = 28.831 (sd = 2.8). In assessing the quality of life, 25.00% reported some impact of oral health on quality of life. In stepwise multiple regression logistic, variables with significant association were quality of life ( p < 0.0001 , Odds = 12:14 , CI = 0:06 to 0:30 ) and need for prostheses ( p = 0.0254 , Odds = 12:39 , CI = 021-071 ).
Conclusions: It was concluded that need of prostheses was high in clinical evaluation. There is a tendency to use smaller with poor oral health self-assessment.
