Clinical Trial Comparing Two Whitening Products: Paste and Strips
Objectives: The goal of this clinical study was to evaluate the efficacy of a whitening dentifrice relative to 10% H2O2 whitening strips. Methods: It was a randomized, controlled, parallel-group, single-center clinical trial with healthy adult volunteers with no prior history of tooth whitening. After institutional review and informed consent, 50 subjects were assigned to either 10% H2O2 whitening strips (Crest® 3D White Whitestrips® Vivid) or a whitening paste (Colgate® Luminous White) and used the assigned products according to the manufacturers’ recommendations. Subjects in the strip group used the strips for 7 days and brushed with the regular brush and paste for the remainder of the study. Subjects in the paste group brushed with the assigned product for 4 weeks. Whitening efficacy was measured objectively by assessing a color change (L*a*b*) via digital image analysis at baseline, Day 8, and Day 29. Results: Mean age (SD) of subjects was 41(14.6) years. At Day 29, only the strip group demonstrated significant (p ≤ 0.0001) reduction in yellowness (∆b*) and improvement in lightness (∆L*) relative to baseline, while b* and L* color changes for the paste group were not significantly different (p > 0.1) from baseline. The Day 29 adjusted mean Δb* values were -2.21 and -0.10 for the strip and the paste groups, respectively, and similar results were observed for ΔL*. Use of the whitening strips resulted in statistically greater (p < 0.0001) improvement of mean Δb* and ΔL* tooth color parameters relative to the whitening paste at both time-points. Products were well tolerated, and there were no adverse event-related drops in this study. Conclusions: This clinical research demonstrated superior whitening response of 10% H2O2 whitening strips compared to whitening dentifrice.
