Assesment of Student's Progress in Making Wax Scultures When Studyng Dental Anatomy
Objectives: The aim of this study was to assess students’ progress in making wax sculptures with a pedagogic method in teaching dental anatomy. Methods: . Step one: two groups of 30 students were composed: the first one (control group) received two different pedagogical methods to sculpt the central maxillary incisor(I.C.) in their first lesson and the maxillary canine(C.) in the second one; the second one (experimental group) received the same pedagogical method but emphasizing corono-radicular reduction. Step two: Students carved teeth in wax (scale 3) Step three: wax carvings from both groups were examined and analyzed statistically. Coronal reduction was measured according to whether the buccal crown face was included in a trapezoid with a smaller cervical base » (B.F.T.), (presence of criterion=1, absence=0). Results: presence of B.F.T. decreased in the control group while it increased significantly in the experimental group. Conclusions: dental students make progress in wax sculptures when the dental demonstration is the same for all wax sculptures.
