Effect of Endodontic Irrigants and an Antioxidant Agent on the Bond Strength of Self-adhesive Resin Cement to Root Dentin

Objectives: To evaluate the effect of endodontic irrigants and sodium thiosulfate on the bond strength of relined fiberglass posts cemented with self-adhesive resin cement to root canal dentin.
Methods: Bovine roots were prepared and randomly divided into 9 groups (n = 5) according to the pre-treatment in radicular dentin: G1(control), 0.9% sodium chloride; G2, 5.25% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) + 17% EDTA + NaOCl; G3, G2 + 5% sodium thiosulfate for 1min; G4, G2 + sodium thiosulfate for 10min; G5, 2%chlorhexidine gluconate gel (CHX) + 17% EDTA; G6, NaOCl; G7, 17% EDTA; G8, sodium thiosulfate for 10 min and G9, CHX. The fiberglass posts were modeled and cemented with RelyX U200. After 24 hours of water storage, disks of 2mm thick were prepared and subjected to the push out test. The fracture pattern was classified under Scanning Electron Microscopy. The data were analyzed statistically by Anova and Tukey’s test (α=0,05).
Results: There was no statistical difference of the G1 compared to other groups. G2 and G3 showed significant differences compared to G9. The bond strength values of G8 and G9 were statistically higher than G5 and G6.
Conclusions: NaOCl and CHX, used alone or combined with EDTA, did not affect the bond strength of RelyX U200 cement to root dentin. However, the single use of CHX showed higher bond strength to NaOCl, combined or not with EDTA.
