Clinical Evaluation of Patients Undergoing to Dental Treatment With Dental Local Anesthetic
Objectives: The aim of this study was to observe whether there are significant changes in vital signs (heart rate, breath rate, glucose levels, oxygen saturation, and blood pressure) of patients undergoing dental procedures with the use of local anesthetic with norepinephrine. Methods: Fifty patients were evaluated, being 26 women, aged between 18 and 70 years, mean 40.6±9.7 years. All patients in the sample needed extractions of one or two teeth, and for that, the maximum of 2 cartridges of anesthetic mepivacaine 2% was used with norepinephrine 1:100,000. All he patients consent to participate of the research. Measurements occurred in three distinct stages: before anesthesia, during the procedure (15 minutes after the beginning) and after dental procedure. The data were analyzed by the program IBM SPSS Statistics v.20, with the level of significance set at p≤0.05. Results: The results showed a significant difference between the different measurements and the heart rate (p=0,004), and between the heart rate and gender (p=0,011). The other signs showed no differences among the measurements. Conclusions: It was possible to conclude that the local dental anesthetics did not affect the evaluated vital signs, because heart rate is possibly altered by the stress factors as dental extraction or anxiety, in these cases.
