Strontium Bioactive Glass, Strontium Hydroxyapatite and Barium Sulphate Resins Radio-opacity

Objectives: To measure the radio-opacity of strontium bio-glass (SrBG), strontium hydroxyapatite (SrHAP) and barium sulphate (BS) in order to develop a smart infiltrating material that is radiopaque.
Methods:
Bioactive glass 37 SiO2- 6.1 P2O5-5 Na2O- 24.4 ( CaO: SrO)- 1.5 (CaF2: SrF2)(mole%) where either no calcium or 100% of calcium was substituted with strontium were made by melting in a platinum crucible at 1500C for 60 min and immediately quenched in deionized water. The bioactive glass was ground and sieved to give <38µm powder.
SrHAP was made by the Continuous Plastic Flow Reactor (CPFR). 52.7g strontium nitrate and 19.8g ammonium phosphate dibasic dissolved in 500ml distilled water. Then, 1ml and 5ml ammonium hydroxide solution added to strontium nitrate and ammonium phosphate dibasic solutions, respectively, to increase the pH. Then, XRD and FITR carried out on SrHAP.
The SrBG, SrHAP and BS were added to the resin as radio-opaque agents at concentration of 10, 20 and 30wt%. Resin discs measuring 6 mm in diameter and 1 mm in thickness were prepared and photo-polymerized. An enamel disk and resin-only disk were used as standard for radio-opacity. Digital radiographs were taken from each sample and an aluminium wedge with 0.6 milliseconds exposure at 70kV and 8mA. The mean grey values (MGV`s) of each sample and aluminium (Al) step wedge were measured by using the histogram function of a computer graphics program.
Results: Radio-opacity increased with strontium content of the BG and HAP and with the loading of these materials in the resin. The BS increased the resin radio-opacity less than SrBG and SrHAP even at a 30% of loading. The SrHAP imparted more radio-opacity than the BG.
Conclusions: Incorporating SrBG, SrHAP and BS increase the radio-opacity but SrHAP has a greater effect on increasing the radio-opacity.
