Post-treatment Evaluation of Mandibular Class II Treated by Balters' Bionator

Objectives: This study aims to evaluate the behavior and stability of the effects produced by Bionator Therapy in mandibular class II subjects.
Methods: The sample consisted of 33 subjects - 13 males and 20 females - at mean age of 10 years and 2 months in the beginning of Balters' Bionator treatment (T0); 13 years and 1 month after orthopedic and orthodontic treatment (T1); and 20 years in the post treatment period (T2). The Bionator treatment effects were evaluated during the T0-T1 interval, i.e. 2 years ± 1 year, which included a phase of orthodontic treatment with fixed appliances to refine occlusion. The T1-T2 interval comprising 6 years and 9 months provided information on post-treatment changes. Seventeen cephalometric factors were chosen for evaluation, including facial type, basal bone and tooth relationships, and aesthetics.
Results: The t test for paired samples has shown an increase in total facial height by 1.48° and tooth height by 0.84° in the post-treatment control period. The maxilla and mandible increased by 10.02 mm and 08.54 mm, respectively, on a long-term basis. A reduction in the ANB angle by 1.48°, with narrow class I relationship between bone bases were reported. BaNa-point A and SNA angles remained stable in the post-treatment control phase. A 2.9° reduction in the mandibular plane angle was achieved. Except for the 2.99° reduction in the interincisal angle, tooth relationships remained stable. The nasolabial angle remained stable as well.
Conclusions: According to this study, one may conclude that on a long-term basis, the outcomes remained stable and the analyzed values improved, and an improved equilibrium of the dentoskeletal facial and functional system was achieved, with no sign of relapse.
