Market Available Adhesive (Cyanoacrylate) is Not Toxic for Gingival Fibroblasts

Objectives: Cyanoacrylates (CA) have been used in medicine and dentistry and show positive properties. The aim of this study was to evaluate the cytotoxicity of a commercially available CA (Super Bonder®) to gingival fibroblasts.
Methods: Human gingival fibroblasts (2 × 10³, 6^th passage) were cultured (DMEM, 10% FBS, 1% antibiotic-antimycotic) and seeded (n=6/gp) in 96-well plates. Groups were divided as C-control, LC-liquid CA, GC- gel CA, EGC-easy gel CA, D-Dermabond®. The growth medium was 24h-conditioned by coverslips glued by CA adhesives and added to experimental groups during all trial periods (24,48,72,96h). Control group was treated with regular medium. Cell viability was evaluated by MTT test and the results in optical density were statistically analyzed (ANOVA, Tukey’s, p<0.05).
Results: Results showed that cell viability was higher for LC and D in relation to EGC (p<0.05) and similar to C and GC groups (p>0.05).
Conclusions: In conclusion, commercially available cyanoacrylates are not toxic for human gingival fibroblasts.
