Selected Physical Properties of New Resin-modified Glass Ionomer Luting Cements
Objectives: To evaluate selected physical properties of current and recently-marketed resin-modified, glass ionomer luting cements. Methods: Specimens (n=12) of GC Fuji Cem 2 (GC America), Nexus RMGI (Sybron Kerr), RelyX Luting Plus(3M ESPE), and UltraCem (Ultradent) were fabricated following manufacturer recommendations using standardized molds and stored in physiologic phosphate buffered saline solution at 37°C until testing. Specimens were tested at 24 hours and 1 week for flexural strength and fracture toughness with modulus determined from the flexure stress/strain curve. Mean results were analyzed with ANOVA/Tukey’s post hoc test (p=0.05). Results: Results are listed in the table. Conclusions: Physical property performance was material dependent. Nexus RMGI demonstrated greater 24-hour flexure strength but all materials were similar at 7 days. Nexus RMGI demonstrated greater fracture toughness at both 24 hours and 7 days. GC Fuji Cem 2 demonstrated improvement of both flexure strength and fracture toughness with time.
