Wear Resistance of New ACTIVA Compared to Other Restorative Materials
Objectives: To measure wear resistance as related to surface roughness changes on ACTIVA BioActive-Restorative (Enhanced RMGIC) compared to RMGI controls (RMGIC), flowable composite resins (FC), and glass-ionomer (GI) treated with different dentifrices (Colgate Total Advanced Deep Clean and Arm & Hammer Advanced White Extreme Whitening with Stain Defense). Methods: Disc samples (n=8/gp/dentifrice, 18x2mm) were made according to the manufacturers’ instructions. Samples were rinsed (30s) and stored (37°C) in deionized water until initial surface roughness (Ra) evaluations were made with a stylus profilometer. Dentifrices were independently used to create a 50:50 slurry with deionized water. Wear testing was carried out on each sample surface with V8 toothbrushing machine for 10,000 cycles. Samples were rinsed and stored in deionized water until final roughness measurements. Data were statistically compared (ANOVA, SNK, P<0.05). Results: The table below indicates test results for wear differences between the initial and final surface roughness. Analysis for GI and RMGIs revealed substantial wear of materials and no statistically significant difference between dentifrices. No differences occurred between ACTIVA BioActive-Restorative and FCs materials for Colgate dentifrice. However, ACTIVA demonstrated greater wear resistance for Arm & Hammer dentifrice as compared to FCs.* Conclusions: ACTIVA BioActive-Restorative demonstrated comparable wear to FCs for both dentifrices tested within the study limits.
