Expression of Alpha Smooth Muscle Actin on Stromal Myofibroblasts in Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma

Objectives: The purpose of our study was to analyze the expression of Alpha smooth muscle actin for myofibroblast detection by means of immuohistochemistry in oral squamous cell carcinoma patients.
Methods: Cross-sectional study of 80 specimens of excisional biopsy of oral squamous cell carcinoma was carried out. Expression of Alpha smooth muscle actin was studied by using immunohistochemical analysis and histological grading parameters, and the association between Alpha smooth muscle actin wiyh histological grading was determined. The data was subjected to descriptive statistics and chi-square using SPSS version 16.
Results: 80 patients included 50 males (62.5%) and 30 females (37.5%) aged from 18-78 (mean 45 ± 14.1). A statistically significant relationship between the expressionAlpha smooth muscle actin and histological grading of oral squamous cell carcinoma have been associated with poor prognosis were established. (P-value: 0.000)
Conclusions: This study displays the strong evidence for the prognostic impact of Alpha smooth muscle actin expression
