All Ceramic Crowns Fabrication Techniques: A Survey Of Dental Laboratories Practices

Objectives: Dental ceramics are the best materials when used to substitute or restore the diseased and lost tooth structure and are widely used due to excellent mechanical properties, optical properties and biocompatibility. The objective of this study was to evaluate the factors which may influence the selection of different ceramic materials used for the fabrication of all ceramic indirect dental restorations by dental technician.
Methods: A questionnaire was circulated to 50 dental technicians working in dental laboratories asking their opinion about the selection of materials for the fabrication of all ceramic crowns. The questions of the survey were regarding the five types of dental ceramics materials indicated for all ceramic restorations namely; conventional porcelain powder/slurry, castable ceramics, pressable ceramics, infiltrated ceramics and machine-able ceramics.
Results: Results: The results of this survey indicate that the conventional porcelain was the most popular 85% (42) material used in the fabrication of all ceramics crown. The selection of a ceramic material upon dentist’s recommendation was less likely 10% (5) found to be the reason of choice of materials. Machine-able ceramics were not very popular in the construction of all ceramics crowns due to high cost.
Conclusions: Modern ceramics processing techniques and materials are not widely used by dental laboratories due to lake of expertise, training, higher cost of equipment and materials. Newer materials for example machineable (CAD-CAM) ceramics are also not widely used.
