STOP STRESS, SLEEP WELL AND SAVE TEETH

Objectives: To evaluate the relationship between parafunctional habits and stress and disturbed sleep pattern.
Methods: A 3-month’s cross-sectional study evaluating correspondence among stress, sleep and parafunctional habits was executed in the Dr Ishrat ul Ebad Khan Institute of Oral Health Sciences, Karachi where 177 undergraduate and 95 postgraduate’s students were conveniently approached. They all were interviewed according to the provided structured and self-administered questionnaire. Clinical examination was carried out under supervision of a qualified prosthodontist in order to verify the dental history. Sample size was calculated from surveysystem.com. Data analysis was done on SPSS 16.
Results: 73.8% postgraduates and 52.3% undergraduates who worked for longer span i.e. more than 10 hours in a day have 60.9% of nocturnal bruxism with 55.2% of tongue biting and 33.5% of lip biting. These individuals had 40.2% of temporomandibular joint pain and 89.7% were observed to have disturbed sleep patterns.
Conclusions: Within the limitations of this study, stress was found to be associated with sleep disturbance leading to development of parafunctional habits. There was no significant association found between stress and type of education.
