THE EFFECT OF EARLY CHILDHOOD CARIES ON WEIGHT AND HEIGHT OF CHILREN

Objectives: This study was conducted to determine the effect of early childhood caries on height, weight and quality of life of children.
Methods: A cross sectional study was conducted in a primary school in Karachi. This research was done on children of age 3-6 years. Children were divided into 2 groups. One group comprised of children diagnosed with early childhood caries and other group consisted of children without caries. A total number of 100 children were part of this study. Height, weight and dmft score was measured of children in both the group. History was also taken related to eating habit, type of food consumed, duration of sleep and daily routine.
Results: The result shows that the group of children diagnosed with early childhood caries were underweight and slightly shorter in height comparatively to the group without caries.
Conclusions: Early Childhood Caries have a definitive effect on the overall growth of child. Pain due to untreated early childhood caries leads to low food consumption and disturbed sleeping habits which affect growth.
