EFFECT OF CYCLOSPORINE DRUG THERAPY ON POCKET DEPTH AND GINGIVAL BLEEDING IN APLASTIC ANAEMIC PATIENTS

Objectives: The objective of this study was to ascertain cyclosporine drug therapy effect on gingival bleeding and pocket depth of Aplastic anaemic patients.
Methods: This Experimental study included 36 patients, 22 boys and 14 girls, between the ages of 8 and 15 years classified in to two groups of 18 each.Group 1:Control group:Patient diagnosed with aplastic anaemia and were not taking cyclosporine drug therapy Group 2: Patients were diagnosed with aplastic anaemia and were receiving cyclosporine drug therapy since last 6 months. The community periodontal index of treatment need was used to measure the pocket depth in maxillary and mandibular teeth in both groups. Gingival bleeding index was used to measure the gingival bleeding on probing in both groups. A Performa was used for each patient, which was filled out based on history and clinical observation of each patient.1-way ANOVA and t-test were used for data analysis
Results: Bleeding gum was present in 74.3% patients in Group 2.According to community periodontal index of treatment need pathological periodontal pocket depth of 4 to 6 mm was present in group 2 on left mandibular central incisor in 54.3% patients, right maxillary central incisor in 48.5% patients, right maxillary and mandibular molars in 42.8% patients and on left maxillary and mandibular molars in 37.1% patients. Treatment need score in community periodontal index of treatment need is 2 in 67.4% patients in group 2.No sign of periodontal pathological pocket depth was present in Group 1.Bleeding gums were present in 35.9% patients in group 1.
Conclusions: Pt suffering from aplastic anaemia and taking cyclosporine drug have increased risk of periodontal pathological depth pocket of 4 to 6 mm and bleeding in gums.
