Prevalence of Primary and Permanent Teeth Caries in Pakistani School going Children Living in Dammam, Saudi Arabia
Objectives: Purpose of the study was to determine prevalence of dental caries in primary and permanent teeth among Pakistani students living in Dammam, Saudi Arabia. Little data regarding the prevalence of dental caries in Pakistani school going children living in Dammam, Saudi Arabia is present in the literature. Therefore, this study was carried out to assess caries prevalence in 6-14 years old school going Pakistani children with the help of decayed, missing and filled teeth (DMFT/dmft) index of dental caries. Methods: This study was conducted during May and June, 2014 and it involved Pakistani children studying in Pakistan International School located in Dammam, Saudi Arabia. Study conducted to find prevalence of caries in both primary and permanent teeth. Sample size for primary teeth was 237 and age range was 6-9 years. For permanent teeth, sample size was 247 and ages varied from 10 to 14 years. Results: Mean dmft score among 6-9 years old children was 3.48 (±3.11) with decayed component comprising of 3.3, missing component of 0.07 and filled component of 0.11. Caries prevalence determined by dmft index was 3.19 (±2.8) for boys and 3.78 (±3.16) for girls. Mean DMFT score among 10-14 years children was 2.03 (±2.9) with decayed component comprising of 1.96, missing component of 0.02 and filled component of 0.05. In boys, caries prevalence determined by DMFT index was 2.21 (±3.45) and in girls 1.81 (±2.04). There was no significant difference found in caries prevalence between boys and girls neither in primary nor in permanent dentition. Conclusions: In girls, prevalence of caries in primary teeth was high compared to boys, while in permanent teeth boys had more carious teeth than girls. Highest contribution of decayed component in dmft/DMFT indicates the need for treatment. Awareness should be given to students about importance of oral hygiene, tooth brushing and regular visit to a dentist.
