“Effect of ZIZIPHUS Jujube (BER) honey on plaque gingivitis and gingival bleeding in patients under orthodontic treatment.”
Objectives: For centuries honey has been used for the treatment of different diseases, its anti microbial properties and its effect on wound healing is an open secret. Patients under orthodontic treatment have more plaque accumulation and are more prone to gingivitis. The effect of Honey on different types of bacteria is already proven. This study is performed to find out the effectiveness of honey in the treatment and prevention of gingivitis and accumulation of plaque. Methods: Its a Randomized Control Trial took place in the Department of Orthodontics, Dr Ishrat-ul-Ibad Khan Institute of Oral Health Sciences, DOW UNIVERSITY, Karachi. All the volunteers were orthodontic patients. Two groups were made one has given honey to apply on the gingiva and on the tooth surface for 2-3 minutes and then gargle with water and drink it. This procedure has to repeat 3 times a day for 30 days. And the other group was the control groups. 30 randomly selected patients were there in each group. Plaque and Gingival indexes were checked initially and then after one month according to the Loe and Silness PI and GI. Certain Inclusion and Exclusion criteria were made.SPSS 16 was used for data entry and data analysis. Results: It is shown that mean plaque & gingival index and the percentage of sites which were bleeding has reduced tremendously in just 30 days in patients who were in honey group. Control group didn’t show such results. Conclusions: We can conclude that honey reduces the formation/accumulation of plaque and gingival bleeding. And there is a therapeutic effect of Ziziphus Jujube honey on Gingivitis. So now it’s the time to recognize this traditional remedy and offer its unpaid recognition
