The effect of IRM exposure time on shear bond strength of etch and rinse adhesive to dentin
Objectives:
To study the effect of the eugenol-based Intermediate restorative material (IRM) exposure on shear bond strength of etch and rinse adhesive to dentin at four time intervals of 24 hour, 1 week, 2 weeks, and 4 weeks.
Methods: Sixty extracted human upper premolar were used. The teeth were cut off at occusal one-third to expose the dentin surfaces. After polished, specimens were sectioned buccolingually to obtain two halves (mesial half and distal half). The resulting 60 pairs (120 halves) were randomly divided into four groups of 15 pairs. For each group, the two halves of 15 pairs of specimens were randomly assigned into non-temporary subgroup and IRM-temporary subgroup. The specimens were stored in water bath for 24 hour, 1 week, 2 weeks and 4 weeks for group I, II,III, and IV respectively. IRM were then removed for IRM-temporary subgroup and all specimens were applied with etch and rinse adhesive. The silicone index were placed over the center of dentin surface to form cylindrical shape (1.5 mm. diameter, 1 mm. height) of resin composite restoration. The specimens were subjected to shear bond strength using universal testing machine after stored in water bath for 24 hours.
Results: There were no statistically significant difference (p-value ≤ 0.5) between shear bond strength of non-temporary subgroup and IRM-temporary subgroup in all four groups. The mean different of non-temporary subgroup and IRM-temporary subgroup in group I, II, III, and IV were 1.49 Mpa, 1.54 Mpa, 3.13 Mpa, and -1.69 Mpa, respectively.
Conclusions: eugenol-based Intermediate restorative material (IRM) did not affect the shear bond strength of etch and rinse adhesive to dentin at 24 hour to 4 weeks.
