Tooth loss and periodontal disease progression among cohort Thai older-adults

Objective: This study aimed to investigate the association of tooth loss and periodontal disease progression (PDD) and other factors among Thai older adults in 5-year cohort study.

Methods: Data derived from the cohort study of older adults aged ≥ 50 years of Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) at baseline and 5-year follow up (N= 2,329 and 1,884, respectively). Of those who completed periodontal examination (N= 1,523) were analyzed. Oral status among cohort members were examined at baseline and 5 year-follow up including PDD (defined as having ≥ 3mm clinical attachment loss at least one site). Other information on an array of potential covariates were gathered, including socio-demographic characteristics (sex, age, income, education), health-risk behavior (smoking, alcohol drinking, periodontal treatment in the past 12 months), and diabetes mellitus. Descriptive analyses performed the feature of tooth loss and multivariate logistic and zero-inflated negative binomial regression were used to determine its association with PDD and other factors.

Results: There is significant difference of incidence rate of tooth loss among those with vs without PDD (43.5% vs 34.3%, respectively, p<.001). Multivariate regression analyses indicated that PDD, age, diabetes mellitus, smoking, and education are significant associated with tooth loss among cohort older adults. For instance, of those with PDD are more likely to have tooth loss and number of tooth loss than those without PDD; odd ratio (95%CI): 1.29 (1.13, 1.93), and rate ratio (95%CI) of number of tooth loss: 1.21 (1.08, 1.74).

Conclusion: The progression of periodontal disease is associated with tooth loss among Thai older adults in 5-year cohort study.
