Oral Health Status among Internally Displaced Children in Iraq

Objective:

 Internally displaced persons faced many diseases that affect their human health and oral diseases are also affected ,this study aimed to investigate the oral health of this group of population.

Method:

A randomly selected 529 aged 12- years old school children from Al Hur sector in Kerbala governorate, where most of internally displaced people were living. Dental caries were assessed using community periodontal probe recommended by WHO. Oral cleanliness recorded by plaque and calculus index . Also gingival health were examined. Statistical analysis conducted using SPSS version 20.0 ,Chi –square and correlation coefficient .P –values less than 0.05 were considered as statistically significant. The study received approval from the Research Ethics Committee of the college of Dentistry, University of Baghdad.

Result:

The mean 1.9 and standard of error  for dental caries was 0.01 ,children with caries free was 30.6% and the range of permanent teeth count was 10-28 .Plaque and calculus were 0.77±0.08 and 0.01 ±0.00 respectively. Gingival index was 0.92±0.01,linear correlation coefficient  between plaque index and gingival index were statistically significant.

Conclusion:

The internally displaced children need more attention concerning dental health programs.
