Association of Leptin and Periodontal Disease in Type II Diabetics

Background:Obesity has been identified as a influential factor for both periodontitis and diabetes mellitus (DM). Adipose tissue acts as a source of cytokines and adipokines, such as Leptin, which may play a role in these associations.

Objective: The aim of this study was to examine whether altered levels of plasma Leptin are associated with the prevalence of periodontal diseases in a cross sectional survey of people with diabetes.

Method: 370 patients with type 2 DM (T2DM) were included in this study. Basic periodontal examination (BPE) was performed and venous blood samples obtained. Plasma Leptin levels were assessed with ELISA.

Result: A statistically significant association was found between levels of plasma Leptin and severe periodontal inflammation (BPE=4) (Kruskal-Wallis Test, p=0.005).

Conclusion: In the population examined there was an associaiton between levels of plasma Leptin and periodontal inflammation, as described by presence of BPE scores of 4 in T2DM subjects.
