Efficacy of Newly-developed Remarkably Thin-head and Slender-neck Toothbrush
Objective: In order to remove dental plaque of the last molars more effectively, the Thin-head and Slender-neck Toothbrush (Clinica Advantage®) was developed. Clinica Advantage® reduced 30% of its head and neck bulk compared to general toothbrush (GT, Clinica Flat-cut®, four-row bristle-type). On the other hand, for the purpose of monitoring the movement of toothbrushes, we established the 3D Position Assessment System (3D-PAS) which equipped electro-magnetic tracking device. In this study, the accessibility and plaque removal efficiency of Clinica Advantage® were evaluated by 3D-PAS and oral camera.
Method: [Accessibility] 15-subjects brushed the upper last molars with Clinica Advantage® and GT. Reach distance: distance between last molars and toothbrush tip and Opening mouth distance: gap between upper and lower central incisor were measured with 3D-PAS. Reach distance was expressed as + and - when the toothbrush tip was on the posterior and anterior of last molars, respectively.[Plaque removal efficiency]8-adults brushed their oral cavities with each test toothbrush for 3 minutes. Dental plaque was dyed using a plaque disclosing solution and captured by an oral camera. Plaque removal rates were calculated with image analysis.[Statistical analysis]Reach distance, Opening mouth distance and Plaque removal rates of the dominant-hand side of last molars were compared with the Wilcoxon signed-rank test (p<0.05).
Result: [Accessibility] Reach distance of Clinica Advantage® and GT were +0.15±1.08mm and -0.40±1.04mm, and Opening mouth distance of these toothbrushes were 2.17±0.98mm and 2.30±0.95mm, respectively. There were significant differences between these two toothbrushes (p<0.05).[Plaque removal efficiency] The plaque removal rate of Clinica Advantage® (39.5±21.6%) was higher than GT (26.0±21.1%), (p<0.05).
Conclusion: Clinica Advantage® showed higher Reach distance, shorter Opening mouth distance and higher Plaque removal rate compared to GT. These results suggested that Clinica Advantage® was highly effective for removing dental plaque of last molars.
