Application of Cone-beam Computed Tomography in Detecting Vertical Root Fracture

Objective:

The study is aimed to compare the diagnostic accuracy of cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) with conventional periapical radiographs as well as intraoperative findings for detecting vertical root fractures(VRF).

Method:

The study include nineteen teeth which were highly suspected as VRF due to clinical presentations. These teeth underwent dental radiography and cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) and flap surgery by periodontist to confirm VRF. One radiologist(A) and one endodontist (B) who did not participated in surgical exploration analyzed these images independently.

Result:

The results were compared with each other and with intraoperative findings. Sensitivity for VRFs of CBCT were 80.00%(A),73.33%(B)respectively;for that of periapical radiographs, the sensitivity were 26.67%(A), 20.00%(B) respectively.

Conclusion:

CBCT is showed to be superior to conventional periapical radiograph in the detection of VRF.
