Method: Sixty caries-free human monoradicular teeth were endodontically treated. Dowel spaces were prepared with RelyX Fiber Post (RXP, 3M ESPE) drills. Roots were randomly assigned to a luting system (n=10): PCE - ParaBond + ParaCem Universal DC (Coltene); PCO – ParaBond + ParaCore (Coltene); MLI - Multilink Primer + Multilink Automix (Ivoclar Vivadent); MCO - AdheSE DC + Multicore Flow (Ivoclar Vivadent); RUL - Scotchbond Universal Adhesive + RelyX Ultimate (3M ESPE); RUN - RelyX Unicem 2 Automix (3M ESPE). RXPs (3M ESPE) were used for all groups. Roots were coated with nail polish, except for a 1.0mm rim around the root canal, and immersed in 50wt% ammoniacal silver nitrate aqueous solution for 24h. Three 2mm-thick slices (C-cervical; M-medium; A-apical) were obtained from each specimen and silver infiltration (mm2) measured using ImageJ 1.44o (NIH). A two-way ANOVA and Fisher’s LSD multiple comparison test (p<0.05) were computed.

*smaller area represents better sealing capacity. Rows: no significant difference was found for means with the same superscript uppercase letter. Columns: no significant difference was found for means with the same superscript lowercase letter. |
Each luting sytem resulted in greater silver infiltration at the coronal third than at the other two thirds. When means were analyzed by root third, MLI and RUL resulted in statistically greater silver infiltration than RUN. MLI also resulted in statistically greater silver infiltration than PCE.
Conclusion: The sealing ability of the luting cement and the buildup resin from the same manufacturer is identical.
