Evaluation of Four Whitening Modalities on Tooth Color Change

Objectives: To evaluate tooth whitening efficacy of four different modalities:  in-office, dentist dispensed for home use, over-the-counter, and do-it-yourself method.

Methods: Extracted human third molars (120) were randomly distributed to six groups of 20 specimens each (Table 1). Group B received a do-it-yourself (DIY) preparation made of strawberry (15 gram) mixed with baking soda (2.5 gram). Group C to E were treated according to manufacturer’s directions. Visual color assessment was performed under a color collected lightening box at CIE D65, 6500K and light intensity of ≈1200 lux, by two evaluators using Vita Classical (VCG) and Vita Bleachedguide 3D Master with interpolated numbers (VBGi). Instrumental color measurements were performed using an intraoral spectrophotometer (Vita Easyshade Compact, Vita Zahnfabrik, Bad Säckingen, Germany). Tooth shade was measured at baseline (T1), 1-week post whitening (T2), and 1-month post-whitening (T3). ANCOVA was performed to compare color change among treatment groups.  Tests of hypotheses were two-sided with an alpha level of 0.05 using SAS v 9.2.

Results: There were significant differences of tooth color change expressed as shade guide units (SGU) of VCG and VBGi, and overall color change (ΔE) among the six different groups at T2 and T3 (p<0.05).
