Simultaneous Salivary Multi-test is Efficient for Assessing Oral Health?

Objectives: In order to achieve comprehensive oral health assessment, a new simultaneous salivary multi-test system has been developed. This system measures seven saliva analytes: [Dental caries] number of cariogenic bacteria, pH and buffer capacity, [Periodontal disease] blood, leukocyte and protein, [Oral cleanliness] ammonia. This system consists of test strips and a measuring device which detects color changes in each pad of the strip, and grades the value of each analyte into 2 or 3-levels. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficiency of this system by examining the relationship between the levels of saliva analytes and oral conditions.

Methods: Oral rinse samples (3ml-DW, 10sec rinse) were collected from 231-subjects (40.3±12.8y). Ten-μl of the sample was dropped on the strip, and the color change was measured after 1 and 5 min. The level of each analyte was calculated, and the subjects were classified into 2 or 3-groups. After collecting the samples, the oral conditions of the subjects: [Dental caries] DMFT, [Periodontal disease] probing depth, [Oral cleanliness] total number of bacteria were measured. The oral conditions between the groups were compared with Tukey’s test and Student’s t-test (P<0.05).

Results: [Dental caries] There was a significant difference in DMFT between the cariogenic bacteria level groups. In the case of pH and buffer capacity, there were no significant differences in DMFT between the groups. [Periodontal disease] In the case of blood, leukocyte and protein, there were significant differences in probing depth between the groups. [Oral cleanliness] There was a significant difference in the total number of bacteria between the ammonia level groups.

Conclusions: The newly-developed simultaneous salivary multi-test system demonstrated that the levels of salivary analytes were correlated with oral conditions. These results suggested that this system was efficient for assessing oral health.
